Sioux Falls, South Dakota Wedding: Melanie + Steve

There's nothing quite like stuffing cake in someone's face.

Just a little more than one year ago, my Stacy and I tied the knot in the beautiful Minnesotan countryside. That day was the best day of my life, but the few months before that day were filled with once-in-a-lifetime decisions. Who's going to be the flower girl? Who's going to be the ring bearer? Are we even going to have a ring bearer? and What's our first dance song going to be?

By far the most difficult question for me to answer was: Who will my groomsmen be?

I've been blessed to have several reliable, close friends in my life. Narrowing my male friends down to four groomsmen was a mental and emotional struggle.

My (only) brother and my (only) brother-in-law were shoe-ins. They're not only blood, but they're also a couple of my closest buds. It was an easy decision. Filling the other two groomsmen positions was tough. To make a long story short, my closest friends Brandon and Steve stepped up to the alter with me and the rest of our wedding gang. (Jeff, Ryan, Brandon and Steve (and my ushers Jeff and Otis): If you're reading this, thanks again for being there for me. I owe beers to you all.)

BTW: Here's my advice for grooms-to-be who are picking their line-up: Don't over-think it. True friends will still be your friends even if you don't pick them to be in your wedding. Don't stress over it.

What you should stress over, if anything, is how you're going to clean the frosting out of your nose after your bride smashes a slice of cake on your face.

When Steve and Melanie asked me to be their wedding photographer, I was even more honored than I would have been if Steve had asked me to be a groomsman. For me, capturing someone's wedding day is just as fun as being in the party. In my mind, the only difference is that I don't have to rent a tux - and, of course, I have a camera in my hand all day.

Steve and Melanie had the most beautiful outdoor wedding I've ever seen. There's always a risk with doing anything outside in South Dakota, but they were blessed with a gorgeous August Saturday. It was a picture-perfect day.

I was honored to be there for Steve and Melanie, but I'm even more honored to have them as friends.

Brookings, South Dakota Wedding: Brittany + Scott

Standing attentively in the church lobby, he removes his hands from his pockets to check his collar, his hair, his tie and again his collar. I thought he looked sharp. Great, really. But he didn't appear to feel likewise. As I try to banter with him, he asks me where I want him to stand, and if he should smile.

These are the symptoms of a groom who is about to see his bride for the first time.

I tell him to take a breath and attempt to soften his expression with a bit of dry humor. He needs to smile. Believe me, I've been in his shoes. (Almost one year ago, BTW, but that's for another post.)

As he sighs and forces a smile, I see a brilliant white dress appear over his shoulder. Carefully trailed by the helpful hands of her maid of honor, she brings her gleaming smile into the lobby, and he brings himself around on his heels.

The effortless, natural version of his smile comes forth, directly reflecting the beauty of his bride.

They promptly approach each other with silent, gleaming observations. She asks him how she looks, and he answers by smiling even brighter.

It happens for every bride and groom, but this type of scene highlights every wedding day in its own unique way. Some are reserved with respect, some scream with joy, some cry, some bring forth cheek-cramping smiles.

In any fashion, I'm always honored to be there, out of the way. Silently and respectfully recording a meaningful moment, just over a shoulder.

Congratulations Brittany and Scott! I was sincerely honored to be part of your big day. THANK YOU!

Cris and Jennifer [Engagement Photos - Sioux Falls, S.D.]

It's hard to believe that, in just 7 weeks, my friends Cris and Jennifer will make their vows right here in Sioux Falls.

The three of us met in front of the Old Courthouse in downtown Sioux Falls for this engagement session. We had a great time strolling along the streets and capturing some great portraits for their invitations, prints, their walls at home and even their Facebook profiles!

They're genuinely nice people with an authentic love for each other. I can't wait for the wedding!

Tricia and Chris [Engagement Photography - Sioux Falls, SD]

If you've never been to Palisades State Park (just a few minutes northeast of Sioux Falls), you need to check it out.

My newly-engaged friends Trish and Chris joined me there for some engagement portraits. It was a great time! The park offered a spectacular backdrop for the spectacular love that these two share. (Sorry for the mushiness, haha.)

Anyway - I hope you like these portraits as much as I liked creating them.

Jennifer and David [Engagement Photos - Sioux Falls, S.D.]

Hey everybody! I hope y'all are having a great weekend. I just wanted to share a few of my favorite photos from my most recent photo session here in Sioux Falls.

My friends David and Jennifer are getting married in Rock Rapids later this year (Yes, you'll get to see those photos too!) and we recently took a trip to the Downtown/Falls Park area to shoot a few snowy engagement photos.

I had a great time with the two of them that day. Jennifer and David have a bright, genuine bond. There's no question that these two are in love. It's the kind of thing that makes me love being a photographer. I hope it reflects through these photos.

But enough with all that sappy stuff! I just hope they (and you) like the photos as much as I like creating them.

I'm definitely looking forward to spending more time with these two and their families at the wedding!

Collin, Nichole and Teegan [Family Photos - Sioux Falls, SD]

When it comes to the world of work, I'll be the first to admit that taking photos is easy (and fun). However, breaking the mold to become an "official" wedding photographer is definitely not. It's a journey with many unique and daunting obstacles.

After several senior photo sessions, a few semesters at the college newspaper and days upon days spent alone with my camera - I still couldn't call myself a wedding photographer. My portfolio (at the time - my blog) waited patiently for interested eyes. I kept getting odd photo jobs - the SDSU College of Nursing's pinning ceremony, an album cover for a local garage band and portraits of a purebred yellow labrador retriever just to name a few. These were all fine and dandy, but I wouldn't call myself a photographer until I shot the most fulfilling photography subject - a wedding.

Then, the phone rang.

It was a friend of a friend who was getting hitched in Brookings, and they needed a photographer. Because it was the first wedding I had ever shot by myself - I gave them a killer rate and a hearty "thank you." My patience had paid off, and the wedding went without a hitch, and they loved the photos. In my eyes, I had officially become a photographer. I really can't thank Collin and Nichole enough.

About two months ago, they called me up again to create their family photo for their Christmas card.

These shots are their first family photos taken in their first (gorgeous) house with their first pet. How could I say no? I shouldn't have been so surprised when they told me that they and their families love these portraits.

After all, when you have good subjects and friends like these, taking photos is easy.

Photography Workshops, Spring 2011 [Sioux Falls]

If you've got a nice digital camera and you want to improve your photography skills right here in Sioux Falls, you should check this out.

I've been teaching a couple of three-week photography courses offered as part of the Business and Industry Training at Southeast Technical Institute. They're very fun classes. We shoot tons of photos and have a great time. No prior experience is required - you only need a digital camera and basic computer skills.

Intro to Digital Photography is a three-week evening class starting on Tuesday, Feb. 1. This class is for beginners who want to learn more about their cameras and how to take sharp photos for sports, landscapes and basic portraiture. Students will learn how to manage their photos and share them online with their own blogs. Intro to Digital Photography will take your skills to the next level and help you create a fulfilling life-long hobby.

Building off of the Intro class, Advanced Digital Photography is another three-week evening class starting on Tuesday, March 1. This class involves advanced techniques and the latest online photo-sharing sites, including Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Students will have an opportunity to create stunning portraits, compose tack-sharp landscapes and use professional software to edit their photos. Advanced photography will also discuss the business aspect of photography and show students several opportunities to apply their photo skills in the community.

This semester, I'm also teaching a new one-day Portraiture Seminar which will take place in April. I don't have the lesson plan finalized for that class yet, but I'm sure it's gonna be a good time.

Basic and Advanced Photography are each six evening sessions over a three week period - a super easy commitment for even the busiest shutterbugs. These classes take place in the Mickelson Center on the campus of Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls.

The Sutton Family [Sioux Falls, SD - Family Photos]

Although I find deep happiness in turning complete strangers into loyal clients, there's not much more gratifying to me than shooting photos for family.

Aside from the occasional holiday gathering, it's increasingly difficult to find space on our schedules to gather around a table. This is why I didn't hesitate at the recent opportunity to create portraits for my cousins.

When it comes to being incredibly adorable, their daughter is a professional. While I strolled through the park with her parents, she ambitiously demonstrated her recently-developed ability to run in random directions. After all, it was a beautiful afternoon in a huge grassy park. Who needs walking, anyway?

Despite a graceful tumble into a quartzite boulder, her heart-melting smile persevered and highlighted some wall-worthy portraits.

I had a very fun time in the park with my cousins. Warm weather and photography aside - it was great just to hang out and reconnect.

I'll probably see them and the rest of my family again within the next month. Tomorrow, I'll have no shortage of reasons to give thanks.

A Minnesotan Harvest

Considering the amount of wonderful things that have happened to me and my business since last Thanksgiving, I'm shocked at how fast the past year has gone.

I'm not sure why my life seems to revolve around Thanksgiving. Perhaps it's because this is a slower time of year for photography business. Maybe it's the tryptophan in the turkey. Maybe it's because, in this crazy life, I don't usually let myself stop - I mean really stop - to count my blessings until Turkey Day. (Sad, right?)

I stopped - really stopped - a few weeks ago when my wife and I were packing for a weekend trip to her family's farm. In that brief moment, I was standing in our office room (in which I am typing right now) and thought about how blessed I am to simply have an office, how blessed I am to have a loving family-in-law to visit, how blessed I am to still participate in a harvest even thought I haven't lived on a farm for more than 6 years.

I was a little hesitant to get behind the wheel of a tractor that's probably worth more than everything I own. Nevertheless, my reservations faded quickly as Stacy and I made the first few swipes across the recently-harvested field. She and I took turns pulling the stalk chopper behind the big green machine.

To cut a long story short - I've found that it's not hard to have a wonderfully authentic weekend in a few Minnesotan cornfields. Contributing to a family farm operation was sincerely one of the funnest, most meaningful things I've done in quite some time.

Also, I probably shouldn't continue seeing myself as a "city slicker." I have rural roots whether I like it or not. Even though my parents don't farm anymore, this is still where I came from. Besides, I can still drive a John Deere just as well as anyone (mainly because it's almost easier than driving an automatic car).

More importantly - I can still look to the countryside for inspiration.

Who says I need to wait until next week to give thanks?

The Luebke Family [Sioux Falls, SD - Family Photos]

As the trees make their annual donations to the ground and harvest spreads machinery across the South Dakotan countryside, South Dakotans mentally prepare themselves for the prolonged, less colorful season ahead.

Much of our next few months will be spent gathering around leaf-lengthened tables full of our family's finest food and conversation. These are perhaps the most meaningful events in our lives, and there is no bigger honor for me than to have helped decorate the family-filled rooms in which they take place.

October decorates our parks with deciduous shades and provides a comfortable backdrop for making some family photos.

This particular blog post features my favorite shots from a recent outing to the Japanese Gardens at Terrace Park in Sioux Falls. I hope the Luebkes and their families enjoy sharing these photos as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Brittany and Scott [Brookings, SD - Engagement Photos]

June is a sacred four weekends for wedding photographers. If June were a house, the wedding photographer would be its obsessive, caffeinated architect. June is gold.

I'll be spending one of those four golden summer Saturdays with my good friends Brittany and Scott, and I couldn't be happier about it. I can already tell that this is going to be a big highlight for me in 2011.

But first - engagement photos! We had a lovely (albeit quite windy) day in the country for their engagement photo session. Brittany and Scott both have heritage which is planted firmly in the midwestern countryside, so the rural scenery fit them very naturally. We had a great time wandering and discovering photographic nooks around the farm. Outings like this are why I love October almost as much as June.

As we dive into the colder months and until my camera graces these two and their families again, June smiles will no doubt be on my mind.

Marshall, Minnesota Wedding: Steph + Mike

As I hefted my camera bag into the delicious air conditioning, I took a moment to wipe the sweat from my forehead. I looked up and discovered a gorgeous, triangle-shaped sanctuary - complete with a menagerie of stained glass windows, glowing skylight and spacious (photo-friendly) alter area. Hallelujah!

The formals, ceremony and reception flowed together like a well-written novel. With all the coordination and low-stress proceedings, the union of these two wonderful people was the most natural, meant-to-be thing I've ever witnessed. Mike and Steph were made for each other. Luckily, I had the chance to be there for them on the first page of their new chapter.

Brad + Michelle: Brookings, South Dakota Wedding

The first time I met Brad and Michelle, they were sitting together in a dorm room in Mathews Hall at SDSU. He had his arm around her, and she was nearly falling off of the futon with laughter. Brad, you see, is a funny guy. He's known to liven up any social engagement with a quick joke or with his side-splitting, four-second impression of John Wayne. He has a knack for bringing out the smiles - the most beautiful of which is Michelle's.

Fast forward about 4 years - and they're still smiling, but for more profound reasons. SDSU blue and yellow accent the alter, the dresses, the tuxes and the bouquet. And so it only makes sense for Brad and Michelle to commit their lives to each other in a beautiful church just a few blocks from the beautiful campus where they met.

A couple hours before the ceremony, Michelle takes a practice walk down the aisle, sneaking up behind her man. As soon as she reaches him at the end of the aisle, she lets out the sun-shiniest smile as he turns, sees her for the first time and puts that same arm around her just as he did on that futon back in Mathews Hall. It's one of those moments when you know things are right where they're meant to be, and it's a great day to be a Jackrabbit.

Amber and Jeremy: Married!

Passion. There are a few things in life to which we devote it. Work, sports, cars, clothing, houses and religion, to name a few. But what's really important? People! We live with and for other people.

My friends Jeremy and Amber had one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever seen. What made it beautiful? Besides the baby blue accents, ivory ribbon bows dangling on the pews, penny-sized bubbles filling their path to the limousine and flowery center pieces with live gold fish, it was the couple that really lit up the day in front of their friends and family.

People and passion. I was honored to be there to capture it for them.

Soulcrate Summer Kickoff Party 2010 - Sioux Falls

If you haven't heard of Soulcrate Music - you soon will. The Sioux Falls-based group is cultivating the local music scene with catchy, powerful hip hop. Thanks to my pal artist/writer/radio DJ Lucy Albers, I had the honor of photographing at the Soulcrate Summer Kickoff last Friday. The group, along with Prof and Rahzwell (Minneapolis), Adapt (Sioux Falls) and Midwest Blessed (Vermillion) filled a giant white tent behind the Lie'Brary bar in Sioux Falls with an impressive crowd.

After crawling, sweating, creeping, crouching and shooting around the stage for the whole gig, I took home a sizeable crop of shots. A few of these photos were featured on The Post, on Soulcrate's Facebook page and now in a special edition here for you. I hope you like 'em!

Even though they Googled me just a few months ago, I feel like I've known Amber and Jeremy my whole life. They're the quintessential, passionate American couple -- following their path together right in our own beloved Brookings.

We had a great time wandering through a beautiful and frozen Hillcrest Park together to get these shots. The weather gave us a very nice, comfortable opportunity to create these shots.

Amber and Jeremy are the type of couple that will look great together anywhere life takes them.

In less than two weeks, they will make the ultimate commitment to each other, and I'm honored to be there to capture it for them.

As I scrambled up the balcony stairs to snap the photo above, my heart raced in anticipation of the day ahead. I knew it was going to be a great day, but I didn't know it was going to be this great. In the next few hours, Steph and Chuck would unite their souls in front of an audience of friends and family in one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever attended. Plenty of smiles, moments and memories happened right in front of my lens.

Steph and Chuck are two very wonderful people. I'm very grateful to them for inviting me to be a part of their big day and trusting me to capture it for them.

One of the best things about being a portrait and wedding photographer is that you get to observe what can best be described as the beauty of unconditional love. As two people begin their new lives together, they look for someone to record one of the most significant things to happen to them in their lives - someone they can trust.

After the honeymoon is over, they'll inevitably experience spats of disagreement, moments of difficulty and tides of stress. Because of these challenges which face every marriage, I believe it's essential for couples to reflect on their lives and the gift of love - to realize and appreciate what they have.

As a precursor of things to come, engagement photos help families and friends open their eyes to the reality of love. Think about it: When you look at a photo of an engaged or newly-married couple, you can see three things: excitement, union and commitment - all three of which hold the subjects together as they begin their journey.

Posts like this one remind me of why I love photography. When I look at these portraits of Stephanie and Mike, I realize that my job isn't just a job - it's also an honor.

Thankfulness

First of all, I want to give a humongous "Happy Thanksgiving" to you on this wonderful evening of what was an amazing Thanksgiving Day.

Secondly, I feel compelled to share my thankfulness. Before you roll your eyes and browse on, you should notice that I'm not listing the obviously thankfullness-worthy things (God, family, health, etc.) so stick with me here.

Here's what I'm thankful for right now:

1. Stacy. Whenever you go through major events (like graduating from college or starting a biz), you need a go-to person, and you need them to be freaking awesome. Stacy is my person, and I love her more than she knows. She has supported me and been with me through thick and thin, and I am eternally grateful to be able to spend the rest of my life with her as my best friend. She's helped me, talked with me, inspired me, made fun of me, laughed at me, cried with me, fought with me, prayed with me, travelled beside me and comforted me. I owe my being to this woman. Bonus: Every time I see her, she is noticeably more beautiful. I am thankful for her.

2. You. When I called up the "South Dakota Tax Fun-ness Let's-Get-a-Sales-Tax-License" bureau in February 2009, I was having, "holy crap, this is happening" moment as I chased my dream into reality. I could not have done so without the support, motivation and inspiration of you, my audience, my clients and my friends. You give me a reason to blab and post photos on this site, and you give me a reason to do what I love. I'm thankful for you.

3. Moonfruit.com. I'm very proud of my website, and Moonfruit has been very useful for me to build my site and get "me" out there. I've heard some very useful feedback, and I like being able to quickly edit/customize the crap out of my site. (BTW: if you haven't done so yet, you should visit shotbyjohn.com and also tell your engaged/graduating friends about it.) I'm thankful for Moonfruit.

4. My iPod Touch. E-mail, internet, games and music when I need them the most. 'Nuff said. I'm thankful for it's convenience.

5. My Grandma Erma's scalloped corn hotdish. I have never. tasted. anything. better. I'm thankful for her awesome cooking.

6. My future in-laws. Most of them don't know that I'm a photographer, but that's made me realize that I'm not just a photographer. That's a good thing, and it's taught me something for which I'm thankful. I need to be a person before I'm a photographer. I'm a person. That sounds simple and kind of dumb, but it's meaningful if you think about it. They appreciate the sans-camera John, which is good in a deep way. I look forward to getting to know the rest of Stacy's family, and I look forward to spending time with all of them (yes, even you Todd.) I'm thankful for every member of Stacy's family.

7. Google Reader. I spend several physically-unhealthy hours in front of my computer every week, and I read and review a lot of stuff. Google Reader lets me subscribe (via RSS) to all of my favorite blogs and news sites and read them all in one site, which saves some computer time which can be transferred to shooting/editing/fun-ness/Stacy time. (It also allows you to subscribe to this blog. (Hint: I want you to do it.)) I'm thankful for Google Reader.

8. The Post/9 Clouds, Inc. All of the people associated with these two things are simply awesome. They give me another reason to do two of my most favorite things to do: hang out with some of my best friends and take pictures. I look forward to working more with these people. I'm thankful for The Post and 9 Clouds, Inc.

9. Julie Underwood. She's a CPA (tax person) in Brookings. Earlier this year, I was having a "holy-moly-I-don't-know-anything-about-accounting-or-tax" crisis. I met with Julie and she helped me get my biz straightened out. I'm thankful for Julie Underwood.

10. I'm thankful for Collin and Nichole Steiger. Before I blab about Collin and Nichole, I should point out that I'm sincerely thankful to every one of my clients and subjects. Collin and Nichole hold a special place of honor in the creation of John's Photography. These two people graciously allowed me to use their beautiful wedding day as a springboard to dive into the world of wedding photography. To non-photographers, it might not sound like a huge favor, but it meant (and still means) a lot to me and my biz. I will never forget August 15, 2009. I'm thankful for Collin and Nichole.

That's it. I'm sure that I missed a few things, but these are the big ones at the top of my mind right now as I sit here in a gravy-induced coma.

Here are some highlights from the Petersen family photo shoot. We had an awesome break in what had been some dreary weather, so everyone was in good spirits. The babies didn't cry, the dogs didn't bark, everyone looked great and the morning sun shone a very nice tone for the entire outing. What a lovely family! I hope they've found a nice one to hang on the wall.

Here are a few shots from the Steigers' wedding in August. This was the first wedding I had ever shot completely by myself. Nichole and Collin are both amazing people. They were absolutely wonderful to work for, and they've expressed their sincere gratitude several times. Although the weather kept us inside for most of the day, we were all very pleased with the results. Let me know what you think!

John's Photography has a new site!

If you've been to this page before, you might be aware that I've never, ever posted anything except photos for my portfolio. No words. It's not because I didn't want to talk to you, it's just because I'm cheap.

Yep, this site has been a completely free way for me to give an excuse that I have a portfolio. It fits perfectly into this desperate photog's budget. But, you get what you pay for.

Although it's worked sufficiently as a portfolio site for John's Photography, it's pretty boring. I put blabbing text on the right hand column, and photos in this column, you have to scroll miles to see everything, and the whole thing is on one page. I mean, let's be honest, you've probably seen better websites.

So, I made a better website.
